The story revolves around Pandiyan (Kamal Haasan), a struggling alcoholic father who is separated from his wife (Meena) and daughter. When his wife files for divorce and refuses him access to his daughter, Pandiyan decides to take drastic action. With the help of a makeup artist (Nagesh), he transforms himself into an elderly woman, "Avvai Shanmugi," and applies for the job of a nanny for his own daughter. What follows is a hilarious and heartwarming sequence of events where he has to maintain his disguise while fending off the advances of his landlord (Gemini Ganesan) and the suspicion of his father-in-law.
