Joseph Fiennes’ portrayal of Merlin is perhaps the most radical departure from the source material. Stripped of the long white beard and the overt, sparkling magic of previous adaptations, this Merlin is a political operative, a manipulator, and a weary warrior. He functions less as a wizard and more as a "kingmaker," driven by a prophetic vision that borders on obsession.
