Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) is a cheerful, struggling junior artiste (“I am the best side-hero in the industry!”). He lives in a cramped room plastered with film posters and worships the reigning queen of cinema, Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone, in her debut). After a studio fire, Om saves Shanti from the flames, sparking a secret friendship. Unbeknownst to Om, Shanti is secretly married to the ruthless producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). When Shanti reveals she is pregnant and wants to leave him, Mukesh orchestrates a chilling murder—setting the studio on fire and burning Shanti alive, while Om, rushing to save her, is beaten to death by Mukesh’s henchmen.
